Public consultation on the Economic Development Strategy (EDS)

Consultation open from Thursday 8th May to Sunday 13th June 2025

This strategy will guide how the Falklands economy grows over the next 15 years—building on strengths and exploring new opportunities, to deliver a growing economy that enables the Islands to continue to determine its own future.

Covering the period 2025 to 2040 the EDS will seek to achieve the following:

  • Articulate a 15-year vision for the Falkland Islands economy, supporting longer-term decision making across government, partners and business.
  • Identify opportunities, growth sectors and key interventions to drive economic development and prosperity, building on the Islands unique strengths.
  • Mitigate against current and potential future challenges that could hinder economic development.

To support the development of this strategy, we want to hear your views on the current economy, future opportunities, present and future challenges that need addressing, and what your vision is for the economy of the Falklands in 15 years’ time.

Why your input matters

Whether you’re a resident, a business owner, an employee, or someone with a stake in the future of the Falklands, your voice matters.

This strategy will shape the future of the Falkland Islands, outlining the jobs, skills and services the economy will need in 15-years’ time as well as what critical policy and infrastructure interventions need to be delivered to get there.

The consultation is seeking to understand:

  • Views on the current economy
  • Ideas for the future
  • Hopes and concerns around change and growth.

The survey will only take 5-10 minutes to complete, and your feedback will help us build upon feedback already received from business and key stakeholders to directly inform the long-term economic vision for the Islands.

What is an economic development strategy and why do we need one?

The economic development strategy will set out a vision for the economy in 15 years’ time and how that can be achieved. It’s about setting a plan for growth, considering the skills, jobs, policy and infrastructure interventions needed in the future.

Over the next 15 years, it’s important to ensure that the economy grows in a consistent and sustainable way. This will allow the community to prosper, protect what makes the Falklands Islands unique, provide funding for important public services and, critically, secures the Falkland Islands place in an ever-volatile world.

The strategy will:

  • Articulate a 15-year vision for the Falkland Islands economy, supporting longer-term decision making across government, partners and business.
  • Identify opportunities, growth sectors and key interventions to drive economic development and prosperity, building on the Islands unique strengths.
  • Mitigate against current and potential future challenges that could hinder economic development.

Setting this long-term vision for the economy will support future decision makers whilst giving certainty to business and investors on the direction of travel. It’ll ensure that growth is intentional, guided and something the whole community can benefit from.
