Falkland Islands Maritime Authority

The Falkland Islands Maritime Authority was established in 2018 by section 4 of the Harbours and Ports Ordinance 2017 and sits within the Department of Emergency Services and Island Security (DESIS) as designated by the Governor. The Head of the Maritime Authority is supported by a small team including the Harbour Master, Deputy Harbour Master and Assistant Harbour Masters, with administrative support from the Directorate.

FIMA was established following a review by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) which introduced the Instruments Implementation Code (IIIC) as a mandatory requirement for all Member States in 2016. UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency as the overseeing body of the Red Ensign Group (REG), which FIMA is a member of as an Overseas Territory, reviewed the systems in place in the Falkland Islands and the need for an independent regulatory oversight body was identified.

FIMA is staffed by experienced mariners with Merchant Navy backgrounds. Everything we do is for the safety of seafarers, safety of ships and protection of the marine environment.
