Description of Service

The Falkland Islands Probation Service assesses and manages the risk posed by people subject to probation. It has a statutory duty to provide advice to the court, and to supervise and enforce community sentences. The Probation Service is involved in sentence planning at HMP Stanley and provides targeted intervention to those in prison and the community. Everyone who has a sentence in prison or in the community has a sentence plan in place to deliver rehabilitative work to address the factors leading to offending.

Youth DiversionThere is a Youth Diversion Scheme in place which aims to provide children and young people with early intervention to prevent harm and reduce the risk of offending. It provides a robust alternative to prosecution through the criminal justice system and is available to all children and young people over the age of criminal responsibility, who are at risk of offending.

The service is represented on the Falkland Islands Safeguarding Children’s Board, the Safeguarding Adults Board, and the Criminal Justice Council. The Falkland Islands Probation Service is responsible for ensuring that victims are supported, and kept informed of key dates during the sentence, and this is usually achieved in partnership with another agency.

Unusually support is also offered on a non-statutory basis – either for those at risk of offending or after statutory supervision (supervision as part of a sentence) has ended. This is an important aspect of the service which plays a unique role in keeping the community safe by offering ongoing support to those who want it.
