Camp Fire

Camp Fires

Camp is the local name used for any countryside outside of Stanley. As most of the ground in the Falklands is peat, once a fire is started, it can burn deep into the ground and can burn for months at a time. A main cause of Camp Fires is lightning strikes.

However, you can help prevent camp fires from occurring. Always ask the landowners permission when visiting their land, and let them know if you intend to have a bonfire or BBQ. When looking for a suitable location for your bonfire or BBQ, try to find a location that does not contain any white grass, diddledee or bare peat. Ensure you dispose of your cigarettes safely. Always have water nearby, just in case. If things get out of hand, call 999 and inform them of the location, and landowner.
