Project Overview:
The project aims to-
- Advance equality , tackle inequalities and reduce discriminatory practice and behaviours.
- Modernise equalities policy and legislation ensuring that protections are fit for purpose for the Falkland Islands.
- Implement international convention obligation and equality related commitments in the Islands Plan 2022-2026.
- Consider what new anti-discrimination legislation may look like in practice, alongside positive social awareness.
- Identify the sequencing of work and what the priorities should be for the Falkland Islands.
- Explore how we can better support those who face inequality and discrimination and make guidance more accessible.
Policy Considerations:
- To ensure effective protection based on personal characteristics frequently associated with discrimination
- To achieve protections which are comparable to other advanced jurisdictions and international standards
- To ensure that everyone has access to their right to non-discrimination whether they are visitors, overseas customers or residents
- To develop a common understanding of the different forms of discrimination
- To permit different treatment in a limited range of circumstances where this is well justified
Equalities Project : Open approach to Decision Making
Community Research
- We are conducting collaborative engagement with stakeholders from across the Falkland Islands, those living abroad that may have links to the Falkland Islands, and those who may have an interest in equalities issues more generally.
- The aim is to achieve a greater understanding of who may be affected by existing problems.
- We want to understand what people need, want and what their expectations are for the overall outcome of the project.
- It is an opportunity to collate information to help identify issues, shape policy solutions, and define future actions.
- Our Community Views Survey is the first part of this programme of work.
