The Falkland Islands Defence Force Role

The primary role of the FIDF is to support British Forces South Atlantic Islands in their role of deterrence and defence.

The FIDF provide a  highly mobile Light Infantry unit, well equiped to operate across the Islands.

Secondary roles include:

  • Armed fisheries protection (in partnership with the Falkland Island Government Fisheries Department)
  • Mountain Rescue (including support to the RAF Search and Rescue teams)
  • Rugged terrain search and rescue (in partnership with the Royal Falkland Islands Police)
  • Administration of the maintenance of minefield fences throughout the Falkland Islands Support to other agencies in times of emergency or disaster
